The area is Lariggan - always has been, as it were, the Lariggan Brook runs through the Minney (now Mennaye); any other spelling of Lariggan is actually incorrect, but Laregan has become an accepted variant. Talking of spelling, on a Planning Notice prepared by the Local Authority, they are drilling and making Conections - duh!!!! We ought to buy them a dictionary and a spell checker ....
I ll tell you why I think someone has used Laregan! I think that Lariggan has been construed as some variant of Lann (Holy/Sacred enclosure) and Regan (some Irish saint who may or may not have graced Penzance!). Bear in mind the nearby Mennaye is believed to have come from the Cornish Mennegh(t)i (Menegh (monk pl.) + ti (house) which would lead us to monastery . The person who conjured up Laregan was probably thinking of it as Lan Regan . Notice how only a holiday maker is likely to pronounce Lariggan with emphasis on the first syllable because it is the REGG bit that should really be stressed.
