The Penzance photographer Vaughen Paul asked my mother to watch the shop
for a while which she did and later Mr Paul sent her pay over...one penny
probably around 1935
Seem to remember it paid for a loaf of good real bread then, not the sliced cotton wool we get now?
 
One could get something worthwhile for a penny in those days but it was never spent
