This reminded me of something we did in art classes. Pour some paints into a shallow tray of water and then place a sheet of paper over the top. When you peel it back, a pattern is left on the paper. Taken at Abbey Basin.
Based on a very old tradition in the Book Binding Trade. Floating patterns used to generate the covers and linings of books. Once the pattern has been generated it was copied as a pattern which could then be printed. Some were highly individual - specific to either printer, binder or owner of the library collection.
