Trengwainton house

Trengwainton House - Previously owned by the Arundells of Trerice, near Newquay; purchased by Sir Rose Price in 1814, late of Jamaica, who made his fortune from sugar and rum. But in 1833 following the abolition of slavery, his fortune dwindled and the house and grounds were sold to the Bolitho family in 1866; the house was enlarged by Thomas Robins Bolitho in 1897. The gardens were created by his son Edward Bolitho in 1925.

Francis Arundell b1625, settled at Trengwainton c1655, the estate being owned by the family for many years before. James Backwell Praed b1779 purchased Trengwainton c1805, which passed to William Praed, who sold then to Sir Rose Price 1814. The mansion was built in 1817. Henry Lewis Stephens b1810 held a mortgage on Trengwainton for many years (from c 1835, rented to John William Ellis Carteret) before it was bought by T B Bolitho November 1866 for £33,000.

Forgot to mention, the original house and grounds, before the mansion, also named Trengwainton, were owned in 1600 by a Mr Cowlynes. Correction to last message .. it was William Praed, father of James Backwell Praed that bought Trengwainton - it was in 1761. Retained in the family until 1814.

My father s family tracks back to the Cowlynes in 1570 ... perhaps they should not have sold it !! ::15:
