to prevent them being made into munitions they were secretly buried during the second world war
 
The rest of the metalwork in Penzance was cast iron, and some Whitehall desk filler of less than average intelligence had not actually worked out just how to make gunmetal and plate steel from it all; too late it had all been cut away ... so it was all secretly dumped. The lions we now have are poor substitutes for the originals which were being restored, and ended up being damaged and/or lost, acording to the version of the story being told. Where are the twisted shaft lamp standards? There is a picture here on Picture Penzance of the originals.
