Somewhere among my albums is one called PENZANCE - MISCELLANY OF POSTCARDS and PICTURES where a similar pic was uploaded if anyone interested enough to find it. It s no. 40/65 and is a postcard by night from the same vantage point - Lescudjack Castle certainly.
That is exactly why I was saying that it needs a careful look, as there were quite a number of pictures from this location, and I am in the process of dating them accurately. Each one shows a different collection of buildings as time marched onwards; I need to look carefully at the OS maps and compare them with the progress of building works; The Frith one is quite remarkable, and in fact the print in J Carter s booklet of the time is more clear than any that I have seen of the original Frith prints.
trepolpen, I have viewed your picture 40/65. Are you aware that this is trick photography? I have a large collection of old Penzance postcards and included are a number of by night pictures of various locations. I only became aware of this when examining postcards I have of Treriefe crossroads including one by night. Lo and behold I found I had a duplicate of one by day. The give away was the people in the photo who must have been standing all day in the same place for it to be real. Another clue that it is a trick is that you will notice the luminicity in all of the windows of your picture is the same. My collection is open to public view by appontment.
Yes, I did realise that this was not an authentic night scene but thought it was a daytime one tinted/painted. I have a really weird, concocted postcard scene of the Prom that just can t be authentic. Nevertheless, it s so bad, it s funny! Look out for it. I shall upload it before long just to illustrate the fact
You are quite right - I have some as well. I also have some that are transparent, so the full picture comes (to light) when held aloft against the gas lamp or oil lamp; my aunt had some bone china that revealed a picture that was invisible before.
It just goes to show that doctoring pictures is not something created by modern magazines as this was a regular practice during the days of early postcard photography. I managed to glean from an old resource that companies such as Frith sent out photographers to seaside resorts who would take pictures of interest which were then doctored back at headquarters. I have a picture of the entrance to Morrab Gardens taken from Morrab Road and the people in it must be at least 10 feet tall if you take the gateposts into consideration. Either that or there was something in the water in those days.
Do you remember a period in the late sixties when every colour postcard had bright red or pink rhododendron bushes in the foreground. I have one e of Sennen Cove from Sunny Corner and couple of others where these are quite incongruous. Will try to dig them out sometime if they are shareable.
