Harold William Ludlow Pool - note no e on the Pool. Story in the family was that he was a pilot and decorated in WWI. I'd love to know more - believe he was the son of the mayor at the time - George Pool
As a pilot (has anyone read the definitive books by Antoine de Saint Exupery, which describe the essence and experiences of wartime flight) his records would be available through the NRA, have a search on the webpages. Copies can be provided at a charge, if available.
Remember when searching for Harold William Ludlow Pool ...
1912 Royal Flying Corps (RFC) founded
1914 Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) founded.
1st April 1918 Royal Air Force (RAF) founded.
They flew on their own wits - little training and a will to survive, mostly it really was a wing and a prayer.
It would be more than interesting to know the story .. I keep banging on about the maritime history. Let s hear it for the men of the air, especially because it is a direct point of history that aircraft were regarded as a machine of war because of events in Mount s Bay.
If you go on the National Archive website. Look at the Medal Roll for World War 1 (WO372/16). I found a Harold William Ludlow Poole a Lieutenant in the D.C.L.I. I would think this is the above gentleman as he is the only one with this name. You can download the list of medalsl he was awarded, when I did this for my grand-dad 3 years ago it cost me £3.50 so charges may have risen slightly since then.
Have just gone onto the National Archive site and Harold was in service from 1914 to 1920. He was a second Lieutenant in the D.C.L.I. and then became a Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. The cost to see the medal card has gone down to £2 ( I should have waited to view mine)
