Fascinating? The Terrace Railing was installed in 1864; I note Symons name; The Geological Society building has gone; and the building straight ahead on Market Place for Samuel York was built in 1850. Bit of a mix.

Oppenheim - Samuel Oppenheim was at Market Jew Street as a Clothes Dealer in 1844; he was based at 37 Market Jew Street in 1851; Israel Oppenheim (his son) had his business as a Merchant and he lived at 13 Regent Terrace in 1871. The next year the statue to our well known son was erected. One thing is certain about this picture and that is that it shows the upper part of The Terrace shops and building as they were at about 1838. There had been a lot of huffing and puffing about the area in front of the new building and in 1853 the proposal was that there be a fountain there (one and the same as now sits in St Anthony s Gardens; Sir Humphry was due to be set on Lescudjack Hill (as a pillar) but ended up where he is now (as a statue).
So Tidings has answered the question as to date of the picture. 1880. The 1838 being the date of establishment of the original business. And yet Sir Humphry stands not at the foot of the clock.
Right, assessment time; This is the represenation of the new premises at Number 3 Market Jew Street, near its inception. Sir Humphrey Davy not being present, it is before 1872; it is not mentioned in the 1871 census; this representation was therefore completed in the intervening months. It would then fit all the presented parameters above. Date now changed on the picture heading to 1872.
