Taken from the Cliff at Newlyn it is possible to make out the 100 or so British French and Dutch warships assembled in the Bay. You can imagine that Penzance was quite busy when the sailors were ashore. There were continuous boatloads landing at the North Pier in Newlyn when off-duty. There were football and rugby matches against different ships involving Penzance AFC and the Pirates. Date now corrected to 1949 - thank you.
