Distant view of the Western Union Fleet in Mount`s Bay, 1949

Taken from the Cliff at Newlyn it is possible to make out the 100 or so British French and Dutch warships assembled in the Bay. You can imagine that Penzance was quite busy when the sailors were ashore. There were continuous boatloads landing at the North Pier in Newlyn when off-duty. There were football and rugby matches against different ships involving Penzance AFC and the Pirates. Date now corrected to 1949 - thank you.
French crabbers on the quay as well. My aunt had two RN sailors billeted in her house, and there were always sailors coming and going, with their jokes and tricks.

The event took place 30th June to 4th July of 1949; somewhere here is the souvenir programme that I uploaded, but I cannot find it onsite.

This event can be found in treeve s Hearts of Oak, in copious detail, including text from the souvenir programme.
