In 1881 the concept of a floating dock was one where vessels could float at all times, as opposed to a dry dock, where the water was fully drained. Now there are Floating Docks, which float of themselves to lift vessels out of the water for service, repair and painting; there are floating docks that carry floating docks, and even a few that are in sections to float themselves.
