Young Male Green Woodpecker

A marvellous shot, Chris! Being a point-and-shooter photographer, I suppose you have a tele-photo lens and lots of technical skill to get such a great, sharp focus of such a bird, presumably a good distance away.

I was 8.91 metres away on this pic, Tpp, 12.59 from the other green, and 4.47 from the wren, then i give them a crop. Techincal skill? none whatsoever. If you have the right lens and can hold the camera still, and be in the right position, you'll get some decent shots. I have a Nikon D60 camera with a Sigma 150-500mm zoom (500mm Nikon probably set you back about 9 grand) for these sorts of shots, but you can get some good wildlife shots with a 300mm lens, until i got the Nikon i've always had a Canon camera, with a 75-300mm zoom. If it's a nice bright sunny day, you can get some decent hand held shots, when it's a bit cloudy and dull, it's a bit hit and miss, so sometimes i'll take out my monopod, ok if you're staying in one spot, not brilliant on the move, having to keep extending it. I must reiterate Tpp i'm no better photographer than anyone else, if you hadn't seen these pics, and i showed you the amount of rubbish i've taken to get these, you'd think i was pretty crap at photography, so it's all relative. :D

I appreciate your modesty, Chris, and your honesty and patience! I know about tripods but I've not heard of a monopod - sounds like a one-legged, purpose-built stand.
