Dolly Pentreath

On visiting Lanhydrock House, the once-home of the Robartes family, near Bodmin yesterday, I took the opportunity of photographing without flash (NT policy permits this from this year, I was told) the small picture of Dolly Pentreath that you see here. Recently, treeve carried out an interesting, fairly in-depth research on Dolly Pentreath's life as a fish jouster (salewoman) and her burial place in Paul churchtown. This fine little painting also has a small plaque under it that ascribes it to no artist but states that Dolly, 1685-1777, was the last speaker of the Cornish language (somewhat erroneously since there were one or two authenticated speakers after her and before the language revival). Does anyone know who the artist was?
Nice picture, thanks. Quite different from Opie's rendition, and for that matter the others. Portrayed here on Newlyn (Western) Green. One thought is that I have no doubt much investigation has been made into its origins, but without a date, all that can be said is that the artist had a working knowledge of the Bay. Neither can anyone be certain that the artist ever saw Dolly.

because the internet has sites advertising the sale of prints, artist name given as RJ Pentreath :)

Presumably an artist who considers himself or would be a descendant of Dolly. When i was in the Mousehole male Voice Choir in the 80s, there was a Rev. Pentreath (of Helston) who was ex of Mousehole who was one of the trustees or the president or similar.

1841 Census contains one RJ Pentreath. Lived in Clarence Street, age 35; Richard J Pentreath was a Spirits Merchant.

1851 Census shows him incorrectly transcibed as Richard T Pentreath; however he is now described as Artist, born Paul. 'Richard J Pentreath', in that case is a strong contender. Living at 8 Clarence Street.

Available from Amazon, as a jigsaw puzzle from the Lanhydrock National Trust Photo Library; stated by the Library as being by Richard J Pentreath.
