For those of you who haven't seen inside a compact camera here it is. Trust me when I say they are compact.
Here the camera is about halfway stripped. Unfortunately the area I needed to get too was still very much deeper in the casing of the camera
Oh yes that thing on the right hand side of the desk that looks like a mechanics ratchet is the very top of the camera (where the on and off button is and the shutter button) and the long piece is a built in battery. Not the one you charge this is secondary to that and is built in to the case. I discovered what it was only after it gave me one hell of a belt.
I now know that it draws power from the rechargeable battery and stores it for the flash. It seems to act like a capacitor hence the pain I suffered when I touched it.
