Frank's Shaft, Giew Mine, near Cripplesease

Relic of the past, this was a new working of the Billia Mine (otherwise Reeth Consols) by the St Ives Consols company. This engine house stands by the B3311 road and used, at least, to portrayed in working condition on the signboard of the nearby Engine Inn, Cripplesease. Operations here ceased in 1923 owing to the low price of tin. 200 persons were employed here in the last few years, the deepest level in the workings being 240 fathoms. What is this in feet?
Thanks to BoP! A fathom is 6feet, I am informed, and that makes this mine 1,440 feet deep, almost as much as Brown Willy at 1, 375 feet is high, incredibly! Just walking up to the peak is hard enough, digging down that far through granite makes one think!

Depth of a mine was usually taken from Addit level, eg 240 fathoms below addit , so that makes it even more.

Good point, P, although with Giew being an inland mine, they may well have had to pump the water all the way to surface.

Reread your post, tpp - it clearly states that the 1440 ft deep mine is almost as much as the 1375 ft high hill! Hang your head in shame, sir!

'Amost as much as' means 'by nearly the same quantity as'! It neither means 'more' nor 'less'. For example, 'The depth of Giew Mine is almost commensurate to the height of Brown Willy'!

By this time you'll have returned from your Saturday night sortie, perhaps, so hopefully my bull**** will baffle your brains at this hour!

But in all seriousness, BoP, I admire the depth of your knowledge which is almost as high as I expect you may be by now! Quite right!

Oh, dear. Surely almost as much , by definition, must mean less than .
For example, 'The depth of Giew Mine is almost commensurate to the height of Brown Willy'!
I contest that 1,440 is more than commensurate with 1,375

Teachers - what can you do with them?

Was my parting 'Quite right!' not an begrudging attempt to concede that you are correct and to eat humble pie::4:, and now you are making me crawl? Perhaps you were under the delusion that I thought being high as a kite::10: at the end of an evening and having a depth of knowledge go hand in hand!::11:
