Marazion is mentioned in a charter by King Richard and a slightly later charter granted by Henry III in 1257. This was all re-affirmed by Queen Elizabeth in 1595, before Penzance was granted a charter.
Marazion is a time ridden blurring of the Cornish for the market held there Marghas Byhgan.
The device on the Seal of 1595 presumably reflects upon a much earlier castle in the area;
the outer towers appear to have been of timber, with the central keep being of stone
and having a domed roof, lookout and portcullis. The Greek Cross is striking. The decoration shows the degree of wealth, though in early days, poverty was a reason for members of parliament being excused attendance at the House. The inscription being 'Sigil'l majoris ville et Borou de Marghasion'
The Seal of Penzance will be featured elswhere on site.
