They flew on their own wits - little training and a will to survive, mostly it really was a wing and a prayer.

Found a newspaper clipping - was shot down over enemy lines - suffered burns which killed his observer - but survived

It would be more than interesting to know the story .. I keep banging on about the maritime history. Let s hear it for the men of the air, especially because it is a direct point of history that aircraft were regarded as a machine of war because of events in Mount s Bay.

If you go on the National Archive website. Look at the Medal Roll for World War 1 (WO372/16). I found a Harold William Ludlow Poole a Lieutenant in the D.C.L.I. I would think this is the above gentleman as he is the only one with this name. You can download the list of medalsl he was awarded, when I did this for my grand-dad 3 years ago it cost me £3.50 so charges may have risen slightly since then.

Have just gone onto the National Archive site and Harold was in service from 1914 to 1920. He was a second Lieutenant in the D.C.L.I. and then became a Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. The cost to see the medal card has gone down to £2 ( I should have waited to view mine)
