On the opposite side of Hugh Street is the row of eight houses designed by Sir Albert Richardson and C Lovett Gill, Duchy Architects in 1925.
These replaced the old limewashed cottages, some dating from 17th century, but all in a very poor state, due to fire, floods and age (reported in 1850 as being very drab and tired).
Mumfords was originally in the centre of the row, but was built on the corner. The designs drew on an earlier building, and the windows matched the earlier design on Mumford's shop.
