Jennings Street, 31st July, 2008

Looking down this street beside the Post Office on the right, one sees the Scillonian or 'Silly Onion' as we use to called it when kiddies.
Jennings street and New Street, two of the oldest streets in Penzance. Jennings Street (I have forgotten its old name, for the moment) and Albert Street (old name Neddy Betty s Lane) were the only two routes to the harbour area at one time. The both ended in slips to the water.

It was another name ... now I won t be able to sleep until I find it ... ::15:

Major’s Lane, and before that it was called Street-an-Dudden, we are talking old ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I recall reading the name Street-an-Dudden in some old book now. It may well have been a corruption of Stret an Donn: dudden from tonn (masc.)= ley-land, turf but this would tend to make it tudden . If however, it comes from tonn (fem.) = wave then dudden would be more likely (T mutates to D in this case because of its gender). Therefore this might mean Street of the Turf/leyland but Street of the Wave is more logical grammatically. There s a thought! ::15:

Wave is most likely, for I imagine the sea would have rolled up here on occasion. Thanks for that.
