The Lime Kilns were of 1872, as the date stone re-erected in 1923 declares. Access to The Battery was through a covered pathway. Access to the small Beach was through a covered way, down steps, between the Lime Kiln surrounding wall and The Smithy. This must have been a particularly heavy area to have visited, what with the forge smoke, kiln smoke, lime dust and stables, with waggons back and forth, coal and other merchandise. The sea must have fairly shot up the steps to the area of the entrance to the kiln yards, and poured down to the wharfs. More to came later .... including the FJC1872 stone and the Cornish family.
