I could be wrong, but I am left with the impression that they are not that old - the lower case modern t and the rest of the execution looks poor rather than unsophisticated. Maybe I am in a bad mood today?
My problem is that I spent 30 years dealing with craftsmen cutting stone and working lettering, either incised in wood or stone, faced lead and in glass. I spent weeks sorting a set of panels for an almshouse in Kent, the letters were just an inch in height in a panel of thirty lines, and each letter was perfectly incised, by hand, each with proper serifs, each set to its neighbour horizontally and vertically to provide a perfect layout and workmanship. What they did was immaculate. I feel actual internal pain when I see poor work, really.
