Newlyn Harbour c1880

Kindly provided by Malcolm McCarthy
Newlyn in c1880
A group of fishermen watching and waiting;
The Old Pier below.
Could almost have been taken 50 years before. The fisherman look the same as in photos taken in the 1800s

Centenary is my only real dating reference point, here. Any more clues?
I have some 1920 s pictures to go up later ...

It does to me as well ... if it is - what is that building with all the windows? (above the gent in the tall hat).

Is it not the Methody Chapel on Paul Hill?? I guess you will have a date for that?? laugh# laugh#

Ahh, well, looks like fishermans clothing trends passed on through more generations than may have been previously thought.Unless these folk were die hard traditional fisher folk who wore the apparal of their forefathers?? Amish style??? laugh# laugh# Or is this a posed shot done in the 30 s to represent an earlier time, methinks??

I just cannot believe that this is the 1930 period, how many fisherman would wear a top hat???

Not just the top hat, there is quite a mixture of head apparel; one appears to be a Baden Powell - I see hard crown bowlers, very popular in Newlyn, appears to be a flat cap, a hard brimmed cap, seems to be a Boer hat? The terraces above in the background were later, I know - vessels are standard luggers; I don t know when all that iron railing was ripped out and replaced with fancy new stuff .

Correction - Correction ... sad# sad# That is Trinity Chapel (1834), not Centenary (1927); so all dating bets are off. Except those around 1880; the railing certainly dates from 1870. I need to check the dates of the houses far right. ::1: ::1:
