On the beach at St Ives - 1959

A photograph scanned from a 120 sized negative recently acquired as part of a larger collection. The negative is one of about 30 that were in a cigarette tin marked Cornwall, the tin in turn was in a larger tin marked 1958/9.

I love the clothing of the three characters, the fishing waders and white hat, the high-waisted trousers and braces, and the boy in typical 1950s summer wear, a wonderful photograph from the camera of Keith Coles who passed away some years ago.

I have reposted the photo correctly as I had scanned the original backwards!
We will try and merge the post and comments for you. The dull side of a negative is its back = the emulsion side. It is not easy to work that out with later 35 mm coated films.

For starters, that is the young lad at St Ives in his dunlops.
It is St Ives, they are at the end of Smeaton s Pier, the picture is scanned in reverse, that is the old stone breakwater and old quay - for more info see the St Ives album on site of the harbour and history.

Thanks for that, do you know who the lad is? Will reverse the photo and repost!

Is there anything in the tins other than pictures, that may give a clue? It appears they may be St Ives people - look at the catch of fish on the sand. Postcards, letters, notes, anything other than photographs? You have made a lucky find with those pictures.

There are very many more photos but all were holiday snaps as i knew the photographer who lived near Bridgend in South Wales. I shal scan some more in the next few days and post them here. There are a number of places which are definitely not St Ives, but I can t identify them.

I have found a Love Wellies site with a posting of yours in relation to Keith Cole and your website;
I have to ask you if you have attempted to trace the family, in case there are any possible claimants of copyright? There is a 75 year standing waiting time if unclaimed. ::15:

I thought I d just be able to flip my photo here on the site but I can t unfortunately or I would have done so. The negatives are quite old and it s almost impossible to tell emulsion side from the other.

The negatives were passed on to an aquaintance of mine following a house clearance and these have been handed on to me. Rather surprised about the Love Wellies bit as that s news to me, will investigate!

I know the problem; we have rotational software on site, but not mirroring. Easiest done on the PC software, but some scanners have a throw back scatter when scanning on the shinier side .

If it was a house clearance, then it is fairly certain that there was no family or family interest; it would appear that you are safe in the assumption that they are free of claim.
The Wellie Site actually copies an entry from a posting of yours to Flikr, apparently, Friday 20th March this year.

@opobs, I ve looked at your upload to flickr, entitled stream playground . I do admire your observational skills, what a wealth of detail you can see in that shot. ::15:

Thanks Penzancemaid, having grown up in that era, I ll be 60 in two weeks, I know what to look out for!

::15: Yes, my childhood wasn t tremendously opulent, either. Lots of people from around that time would echo your sentiment.
