Penzance Boundary - Early

The original Boundary 0f 1614, was marked by stones in 1687.
Defined by King James I, as being a half mile radius.
It was centred on the Market Cross, which had been set up in the centre of Bull Market (which later became the Green Market).
It was measured by pacing, not unnaturally the stones were not accurately set.
The boundary in 1875 was the same circle, but measured and the centre taken from the North West Corner of the new Market House.
Over time the Boundary was changed a little, to accommodate the coast of Chyandour [in green], as that shown in 1928.
The boundary of 1875 is marked in light blue, with stones that were positioned in 1687
Note that in 1875 there is no mention of a boundary stone or bench mark near the position that would have been occupied by any 1687 stone at Wherrytown;
however, a stone was marked on the 1936 map, and is shown also here on the 1875 in the lane which crosses Lariggan River [BM 20.9].
It is my belief that that was the original position, as it coincides with the circle.
The Boundary was to the Low Water mark of ordinary Tides.
The LWM of 1841 is indicated in red, that of 1851 in yellow. The 1875 LWM is as seen on the map.
There are two boundary stones (in blue square) - later definition.
What is the date of this map? Never mind, I think it is the 1875 OS map you have already put up close ups of.

Slow is good. It was just that rrrrrrichie was interested in such a map; I am working on the 1934, but it is a larger area. What it does show is just how our shoreline has changed with the effects of the Jubliee Pool and the Harbour Piers. It will be interesting to compare the lines of 1875 with the present lines of LWMoOT.

Glad it will help to give a better picture of the early days; there is a confusion zone, when certain parts of Madron and Penzance drifted and merged - I will try and sort that in map form.

Glad that you like it; I have just delineated Penzance in Madron and Madron in Penzance, the two stones (blue square) that I mention above are the later outer limit corners of Penzance in Madron - doubt that they are still there, it appears that some consideration was previously given, as they are not referred in any documents that I have yet seen,
