Pigeon Race - Princess May Rec, Ground - 19Jun10

Pigeons were released by the NIPA (Northern Ireland Pigeon Amalgamation) today, 19th June, 2010, at 09.30, from the Princess May Recreation Ground, Penzance. They were bound for homes in Northern Ireland. These photographs show the process: 4 lorries arrive and organise themselves; there is a count down to the start of the race; the pigeons are launched and make their way to the Emerald Isle; the men clear up the pigeon poo in their lorries and depart themselves.
Offers a striking redefinition of the name 'bird brain'. Their navigation system is staggering, and all without Google maps. Did you get any pictures of the birds?

How is the arrival of each pigeon registered without the possibility of cheating? I should imagine that a ring on their leg activates something as soon as they enter their coop. Am I right?

When the bird returns, it has to be caught by the owner who removes the ring which has its own individual serial number and places it in a specially designed clock. The pigeon's time recorded is not the actual time it arrived, it is the time the ring was removed, placed in the clock and recorded, which could be many seconds/minutes later.
