Just reading Polwhele's History of Cornwall; in it he relates the fact that in this area of [what was then a foreshore] there were five or six houses on the beach, which were 'in living memory' undermined and demolished by the sea, Polwhele's history was compiled in 1814. That rather gives a strong clue as to what has happened to the soil cover of the rocks that form this front, with Battery Rocks. This is rather telling as to the original 'fishing village' and its original chapel.
