Railway Viaduct

The storm damage of 1852, showing broad gauge tracks. The wall next to the station, around an 800 feet length was also pushed over by the force of sea and wind. Illustrated London News picture.
It was a very risky venture on the part of the Railways to plant the line on trestles in the sea in that location as they soon discovered!

To be fair, it was very solidly built, I have a 'copyright' picture of the seaward side when the wall and bridges were being built, the timber and jointing was massive. But, as is usual, underestimating the power of wind and sea was just as now, though perhaps more so now. Water is over a foot deeper than in 1817, and still the cry is 'overtopping' rather than dealing with the might itself.
