Regent Square - 01

Regent Square, shows in the 1841 Census, with 6 of the 21 houses at the time unoccupied, clearly not long completed. The pilasters are decorated as those on the 'Railway Inn', which itself was clearly there before 1841 and therefore prior to the arrival of the railway. Detailing of Regent Square indicates 1830s. The Inn that became The Railway is shown, complete with annexe, on the 1842 Tithe Map. It also indicates as a building of the late 1830s. Courtney writes of Regent Terrace, it was of a dozen houses or so, and the east was garden ground. In 1836 the other houses were begun, completed in 1839. Regent Square was built on what was a green field; Courtney had been shown the plans by John Matthews in 1838; the field's last use was in 1835 for a Sunday School Tea. In around 1840 there were three architects in town, Edward Harvey and his son James Harvey, as well as John Birch. It is my belief that houses in Regent Terrace, Regent Square and The Railway Hotel (before it was so named) were by the Harveys, around 1839. I also believe those on Penrose Terrace (1834) and Trewartha Terrace (c1836) to be by the same builder/architect.
