A James Gibson, Scilly Isles card.
Wingletang Ledge 10th September 1950, in dense fog.
The Kittern scraped her way over the rocks and managed to get 20 passengers off in boats.
Visibilty was nil.
The Kittern managed to ground herself, but got free quickly, minus rudder.
Lifeboat Cunard saved the passengers and then went back and towed the Kittern.
Scillonian freed on the tide.
A few repairs and she was off again.
That is what was so very striking about this ship.
Three groundings, only two trips not made.
They were stalwarts all round - they just got on with it without any help from rules written
by people who have never experienced any such life or machinery.
