Scillonian III

Scillonian III. She is not only a lifeline to the Isles of Scilly, she is a reason for travelling to Penzance, generating life and income to the area. Not only that but her graceful lines as she crosses the bay add pleasure and interest; this Bay is alive.
good picture to show ScIII s lines - however she was built in 1976-77, with her inaugural voyage from Scilly to Penzance on 25 May 1977 (her maiden voyage hcing been from Appledore shipyard to Scilly on 18/19 May 1977

Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall 17th May, 1977. 68 metres Length; 11.25m Width; 2.98m Depth; Weight 1255.25 tonnes; Cargo 100 tonnes; Passengers 600; Engines : 2 x Mirrlees Blackstone ESL 8 Diesels : 1200 BHP each; Electrical Generators 375kW; Speed 15.5 knots; 1.8m Bronze propellers : 1,000 revs per mile; Bow propeller / thruster
 
I ve had many a fine trip on that boat heading off to entertain the the happy island folks. Never had any trouble getting gigs over there. The memorable return journey was the one where the view from the rear cafeteria was one of only sky for a few seconds followed by restless water for the next few. I remember being told how mischievous Scillonian kids once on board would get a sick bag, break a pasty into it then pretend to be sick into the bag. They then ate the contents. Tasteful humour eh?
 
Great stuff ... they used to do that on the old Scillonian according to my grandfather. ::15:
