Sir Christopher Cole's School

Sir Christopher Cole's School; Founded 1862;

in honour of Captain Sir Christopher Cole 1770-1837, friend of Sir Edward Pellew (Viscount Exmouth).
Christopher Cole was born 10th June 1770 at Marazion, (the youngest son of Humphry Cole);

he died 24th August 1836 at Killoy, Cardiff, after an exemplary career; KCB,

his elder brother was Francis Thomas Cole b 1760 d 1798, buried St Hilary; also a RN captain.

They had brothers in the Church, Rev John Cole and Rev Samuel Cole.

A School built for 113 boys. A National School, although built on land of The Church.
The School was managed by the incumbent, curate, chapelwarden and six others.
'a school for the education of children and adults or children

only of the labouring manufacturing and other poorer classes in Marazion and the neighbourhood'.

On the 4th April 1921 the school was absorbed into the Marazion Council School (originally 1878 Marazion Board School)
which all closed 1988 as Marazion County Primary School.
The building has an appearance of having been partly re-built in c1895, when extensions were added.

The Arms

These Arms are those of Sir Christopher Cole, KCB,

with those of his wife Mary Lucy, daughter of Henry Stephen (Fox-Strangways), 3rd Earl of Ilchester,

whom he married as her second husband on 28 April 1815.

The Arms on the sinister thus represent the wife’s family, consisting of Fox,

the design with the chevron and fox’s heads, and a canton, Strangways, and one other coat.

Royal Licence was granted to Samuel Cole, clerk, D.D.,

brother of the late Sir Christopher Cole, KCB.

This permitted him to bear the augmentations to his Arms granted to Sir Christopher.

Following a grant to Samuel of the basic Cole Arms on 19 October 1836,

an exemplification of his augmented Arms was granted on 5 November 1836 [Coll Arm Ms Grants 41/389, 341].

For now!! I have only worked on what I have here for now. I need to check more into the family history, though I have the Heralds Visitation for the early story. I also want to know more of the ships that the Cole brothers captained. With Pellew in tow I hardly imagine their lives were quiet.

The fact that Sir Christopher died near Cardiff, puts me in line of thought to look at Wales. The Red Dragon is shown on the Arms of Cardiff, standing and holding the banner flag of Iestyn ap Gwrgant, last Prince of Glamorgan.

I have studied years ago, some heraldry. The books I had were loaned to someone - guess what, never saw them again.
I have discovered from Marshall s that Sir Christopher was MP for Glamorgan, that therefore is the reason for the dragon rampant.

The Cole Family of St Hilary all listed, as well as the career of Captain Sir Christopher Cole and his brother Captain Francis Cole; it is spread on the miniCMS of all the pictures.

I have just had a reply from Bluemantle Pursuivant, and he has asked to see the picture of the arms, in order that he may be able to assist. Watch this space .....

I have just received Bluemantle Pursuivant s reply, I will shortly add the description of the arms above....
