I should like to see a similar shot from many decades ago, minus the modern estates, for comparison. That will truly be the archetypal layout. Actually, the church being on an island like that is possibly not that common?
The island no doubt stems from the fact of its appointed position in The Church in these ere parts. I was meaning more that the layout could still be seen. Most layouts of hedging stem from lines of geographical features, unless they have been defined by agriculture, or by design of measurement, or by definition within a certain distance from a point (such as a church or large house).
