Like a mini city centre on an island. I love St Ives but I think it s been spoiled over the years by commercialism and lack of proper planing. I believe it can be saved from itself if the building and development stops right now.
So many places are killed by their own popularity; my grandfather always had the maxim, everything in moderation. The original reason that St Ives grew at all is given in my write up in the pages on St Ives Harbour; that reason has gone; the railway is near dead, and that is because of the increase in the desire for individual transport, resulting in another stranglehold and presenting a different St Ives from that portrayed in the Painters works over the years ... I could go on .... much the same is happening to Penzance for other reasons. Without common sense these two towns will be dead before long, one way or another.
