Lawrence Leonard was an important figure in the musical world. A cellist in London, studied in Paris and London, with Ansermet and Kleiber. He had over 200 BBC broadcasts up til 1960. In 1958, he had been invited by Leonard Bernstein to conduct that masterpiece West Side Story in London.
On a personal note, I wondered why he asked my name ... he spelt it correctly without asking, deserves a merit mark for that. Got my vote.
Having been to the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal
Festival Hall I can seriously state there is no comparison between listening to a CD and attending a full concert.
Too often in this age, out are trotted little tunes and jingles, mobile phone clips.
Real Music is something to be felt. To see the performance unveil before your eyes, as the combined sounds evolve and mingle in your ears, the sounds felt by your body, through air and floor.
This was When 'things happened in Penzance'.
Now, I am reminded of those immortal lines 'We may not enjoy living together, but dying together
isn't going to solve anything. ...'
Compared to those days, Penzance is a Ghost Town already.
