Taroveor Road - 31st July, 2008

(Seems to be the Cornish 'Tarow = Bull; Veor = Great', so Great Bull Road) This sort of ties in with the Cattle market that used to be in the vicinity. I can remember flinching as a boy as I heard pigs screeching as they had their ears punched on the right at the end where there is now a small car park.
Traditionally known as Bulls Lane ... my uncle would have it as no other name.

I don't remember it every being referred to as 'Taroveor Road' during my childhood. Always 'Bulls Lane'.

At one time they used to drive cattle down to meet their demise at the slaughter house's in town back lane
(Bread street) when it was a busy market there....Tuesdays - pig market...thursdays cattle market and there
was half-day closing of the shops on fridays..how things have changed over the years..

We lived in Madron and I caught the bus from the Cattle Market bus stop most days, my Grandmother lived in Adelaide Street and I frequently walked along Bread Street so I got to see both ends of the process so to speak!

Does anyone else remember hearing about a cow/bull who escaped from the Cattle Market and ran amok through Penzance? My Grandmother told me the story so I'm not sure when this happened. The poor beast, according to Gran, ended up down by the station and leapt over the station wall onto the tracks.
