This snap taken today of the Tesco Metro in the main street. Tesco return to our high-street after nearly 15 years.
The new store is due to open next week 16th December 2009.
I think this is a sorry state of affairs and is an affront to shopping and commerce in Penzance. Having picked off all the fat from Penzance's shops, and having dragged the population out of town like some latter day pied piper of Hamlyn, it returns to kill off other remaining outlets. Keep local shops please. I know it can be argued that it provides jobs ... yes, until the others close down or get sold off as yet another mobile phone shop or art gallery. I expect arguments ... make them convincing.
The opinions I've heard from a fair few people is that Tesco Eastern Green is on it's last legs. Not enough staff, low staff morale, shelves not refilled and customers drifting to Morrisons. Perhaps the plan is to close it down, hence the opening of this store in town. Personally, I think we could do with another supermarket in town to break the monopoly held by the Co-op - which I think is a tad expensive. But not a Tesco - I don't shop there on principle as I disagree strongly with what they've done up and down the country. And in spite of what people like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have tried to do in regards to animal welfare, I am still under the impression that Tesco are not really interested in what happens to the animals before they end up as meat wrapped in plastic.
I see, insurrection.... I first came across Morrison's when we went to 'arrogate. Very upper crust place, don'tcha know, what. That was twenty years ago. At the time it struck me as THE place to shop as the quality and service was second to none. A little bigger on the pocket, but we thought well worth a few pence more. However that was Harrogate, and this is now. I also need supermarkets like I need three feet, my yard is big enough now.
OK here goes.... For the most part a lot of younger members don't remember the town as it was with local shops that served you over the counter. But the supermarket is here and we have to face that fact. In fact the supermarket has been over here since the late 60's. In my opinion supermarkets reduced the cost of food and introduced real value for money. A lot of the smaller shops charged extraordinary amounts for food and I believe that until the supermarket came along no real competition existed.
Still that said, I feel that the government did very little to control supermarkets and therefore they became (in some ways) more powerful that the government. They control so much of our lives it's scary. A recent report stated that the Tesco club card database holds more real time information about the populate than MI6... That is a serious concern isn't it.
As for low morale.... TABTAB13... you are bang on the money!
A recent change in management has upset so many staff that many have left. The management team have mostly failed because of either hard line tactics over taxing the remaining staff.
Rules have been introduced to suppress the workforce which is having the opposite affect.
Sure the store is busy..... but they have serious internal hierarchy problems with a power mad management team.
BTW... I was also an advisor to Tesco directors on what is now known as Dot come (home shopping) Perhaps I should have kept quiet
I agree that in an ideal world, a local shop would be preferable, but what sort of merchandise would they sell and how long would they last? What sort of shop do you feel is missing from Market Jew Street?
I would like to see a good old fashioned Model shop....one that sells varied models of ships/houses/boats/airplanes/cars/ or perhaps a dedicated Lego /Mechano store...It won't happen...but you never know?...
