The Archway - 5

Not really - but a map of the area from the 1875 OS.
Indicated is the present quarry area (in blue line).
The route of the track to Trungle is shown, of which the arch is a part.
The marked area 'Battery' was a defensive area with cannon, of the same time as Battery in Penzance. I have an illustration somewhere.
At the top, Stone Cottage, is that the infamous Jan Stone s Cottage?
It was said to be on the road to Mousehole.

The stories that my grandfather told me of Jan Stone were legion, I never knew whether or not to believe them, but my mother had more ... He was said to take his horse and cart up the hill to Paul. ::15: Could well be his ... ::15:

The cottage on the road from Newlyn to Mousehole, described in the first paragraph, was probably the home of the legendary Jan Stone about whom so many Newlyn stories were told. The water shoot just beyond the cottage was known as Jan Stone s shoot. The cottage had an orchard attached and a daughter of the builder of Carn Gwavas Terrace described to me an incident in her girlhood when she and some other children were scrumping apples in Jan Stone s orchard. The old man ran out after them shouting I shall write your books down in my name! Somewhere I have a postcard with a big crayoned cross on the wall of the cottage and the caption Jan Stone s cottage . The card shows a horse and small cart on Sandy Cove, below the cottage, which is of interest because Jan was known to have been a carter. It is thought that St Anthony s church, now a private dwelling, was built on the site of the cottage.

Fascinating. He was reported to have been told off seriously, by a group of ladies, for making the poor horse struggle up the hill with so much grain sacks on the cart. So Jan got out, ceremoniously and with respect, lifted off one sack, carried to the front and placed it on his lap - c mon old girl, one lighter now ....

I can t remember them, but as a youngster and going to school in Newlyn, there was always a story or antidote about Jan Stone.

Then his horse dropped dead and Jan said thats a dirty trick e hav nt done that before

If somebody does something downright stupid or with no rhyme or reason, we say That s a bit Jan Stone .
