Quarrying at Penlee was started 'late' - it began in around 1883.
One of the first clues of the start of quarrying at Penlee is the record of a burial at Paul, dated 2nd March 1886. That of John Ray of Sheffield aged 29 (Killed by explosion dynamite Gwavas Quarry).
The original quarry was run in 1883 by Mr. James Runnalls.
