13th January 2009: I am assuming that the bridge is 'simply' being overhauled and re-built; here the open frame is easier to see and torches are in use. I suspect at this stage the bridge frame is off its pivots and is being relieved onto the new concrete strips. I note a surrounding scaffolding, the Dry Dock has to continue to be accessible for vessels, and I have no doubt many HSE requirements are in hand for the protection of the men. In order to service the bearings and tracks, the bridge frame will have to be jacked. Another implication of the new concrete bearing sheets is that the bridge will more than likely have to be lowered on to new bearings to maintain the level of Wharf Road, or else ramps will have to be introduced.
