A new building was erected in 1862 by The Cornish Copper Company to house the new customs offices; it remained thus only until 1889.
The warrant for handling customs was originally held in St Ives and after much heated argument it was transferred to Hayle.

The front step is marked with compass points - said to have been used to check ships' compasses, showing true north and magnetic north. The practicalities of callibrating a compass from such a mark on the ground would have been troublesome.
