Water Polo and Swimming Regattas were a popular form of entertainment in the 1950s and 60s. Penzance had an exceptionally good water polo team made up mainly of Pirates Rugby Players, not a bad qualification for successful water polo players! I used to enter a few swimming races a bit myself and get clapped as an also-swam as I came home to finish!
