Checking this in C. Thomas' 'Penzance Market Cross', I see the cross may date from Norman times and stood for centuries in 'Park an Grouse' (Field of the Cross) a little north of Alverton St. Before 1829, it stood in the NE Greenmarket and was moved to the bottom of today's Causewayhead by an old pillared house. When this was demolished, the cross was set in the west end of the Market House in 1869, near Morrab Library in1899, the east side of Penlee House in1953 and its present site 1999.
