Before Morrab Road was formed, and broke through North Parade (a narrow lane existed there before) there were cottages which extended down the lane, behind North Parade, where this building now stands.
Built as The Unionist Club in 1913, designed by Henry White architect of Penzance. Later became used as Barclay s Bank sub-branch, which moved across the road into Stewart s Buildings (the lower shop which was Hawkey s grocers); now this building is the PHA building.
Still hoping to find a picture, direct or indirect. It presumably was a figure. The Unionist Club was National, at that time part of the Liberal Party, I believe, when they went their separate way from the Conservative Clubs. I suspect from the shape of the niche and its height, it was a suitably allegorical but scantily clad lady of virtue .. what else for a men s club?
