In 1826 Clarence Street was formed, having demolished a large ruined house, which was situated on Alverton Lane, in 1824, and a new building was put up, which became an Inn run by a Mrs Drown; by 1851 it was known as The Western Hotel; 1861 it was run by William Mitchell until 1891 and handed on to his nephew F W Mitchell; In 1927 it as described as an old established hotel replete with every modern comfort .
