Wreck of SS Primrose Mounts Bay

Wreck of SS Primrose Mounts Bay - this is a Gibson
Primrose (the fourth one lost S Cornwall), rammed herself on Low Lee Ridge 3rd August 1906.

It was during the subsequent salvage of this vessel in 1911 by the Western Marine Salvage Company that the (now missing) bronze cannon that stood outside the Libray came from. For many years a group of us dived and researched the remains of a sailing ship upon which the Primrose had settled on the West side of the Ledges. We found Iron cannon masses of musket and cannon shot, even parts of a leather jerkin and shoe soles, even coral and whale bones!. There are hundreds of red and yellow Dutch bricks littering the site. Our research narrowed the date to 1637 when a Spanish vessel towed in Dutch prize only for it to be cast away in Guavas Lake Last time I dived on Low Lee Ledges was about 10 years ago. With the Baydivers team now scattered I doubt the name of that old vessel will ever be known. We believe the vessel was of a type known as Fluyt and a quick searh for the name Duyfken on Google will show you a replica. Just for your info. laugh# laugh#

Yes I archived the finds before I left the UK. A friend has the disks. There have been others who have dived the site over the years. It is because of this contamination that it cannot be designated for protection under the current legislation. I am going to add an album which will contain a few images that I just happen to have kept including the image of the iron cannone we raised back in 1967. When I get back to our apartment in Fethiye, Southern Turkey in the Summer I will put aside the archive to being back and add to that album.

I am so glad that records have been kept; I have assisted a few divers around the world, in their underwater archaeology, providing information and locations, as well as photographs. I look forward to seeing your album.
