A mid summer season match between Devonian Torquay United's near-league side and Penzance. Anyone know the final score. My memory has let me down again!
This was the Challenge Trophy sponsored this time by the Penzance's manager's business in Hayle, I believe, and involved teams from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as the Magpies. With Penlee Park full of young people, I thought some of the 4-letter expletives from...
I remember this match in 1992 well since with Exeter City manager and World Cup champions, England's Alan Ball, sitting in the stand and frustrated by his team's lack of headway, Penzance managed to acquit themselves extremely well and the result at full time was 1-1!
Penzance has entertained some top flight professional football clubs at Penlee Park: Luton Town, Stoke City, Brentford, Swansea Town, Plymouth Argyle, Liverpool, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur, Exeter City and Torquay among others perhaps.
This evening match attracted both home supporters and summer visitors to Penlee Park and was a tall order for the Magpies since Leicester brought pretty well a full strength side for a summer stroll!
Held in St Austell - St Blazey didn't have to travel far! - Penzance went on to win the Senior Cup in the final for the eighth time as well as being runners-up in the South Western League!
Penzance was now 101 years old as an AFC and invited Celtic to Penlee Park. If I am not mistaken, they beat the Magpies 6-1. I think the Magpies' goal was from a penalty.
Liverpool, Plymouth Argyle and the Magpies were involved in this the SWEB Challenge Trophy. Many of the two professional clubs' leading players were to take part.
Among the most notable signatures on this page of the programme in the last pic are Steve MacManahan, Steve Staunton, Phil Thomson, Steve Harkness and Mike Hooper. One cheeky devil from the Magpies team sneaked his name in there, namely Chris Penfold! The competition was a triangular one in...
Clearly Penzance lost the previous match against Truro, the subject of an earlier programme of the semi-final held at Bickland Park, Falmouth. I wonder if they beat Nanpean in this the runners-up match for 3rd Place.
This match in March, 1960, was the quarter final of the Southern Counties Championship. Anyone recall the result of this match and the latter stages of the competition?
Clearly, Penlee Park used to be a respected venue for county matches. I wonder when the last county match was held there. This team was also billed as 'West Indies International Team'.
Having welcomed leading amateur clubs, Clapton and Wycombe Wanderers, to Penzance for Easter/end/beginning-of-season friendlies, now it was Barnet's turn.
I remember this match but not the score. Though a non-league, amateur team at that time, like Barnet, their pedigree has shown through. They were a famous team even then. I recall their quartered shirts in navy and turquoise, if I am not mistaken. I've no idea what they wear nowadays.
