Every cobble has been removed from the quayside and stored carefully in these blue bags to avoid damage and to permit their replacement once the wharf has been re-inforced. The N.T. will no doubt do a good job.
In the long term, all this work will reap rewards by strengthening the quayside which has suffered the effects of flooding and will again no doubt. Visitors are not obstructed however, since they all can pass freely behind these buildings along Elizabeth Tce while work is ongoing.
Though this does little to impede visitors thankfully, the NT has the duty of making the quayside safe. A survey revealed lots of hollows under the cobbles which might have caused unexpected subsidence.
This picture of Sandy Bank was taken in 1924. I haven't been given any copyright information with this picture so I hope that this picture is ok to put up. However if anyone knows that this might be in copyright then let me know please. I couldn't find anything myself.
This view, taken 7th January, 2009 from Wharfside on a very cold day, looks to the Harbour Bridge, St Mary's Church and the renovated Coulson's Warehouse building.
