Mandy Edwards, Jance Harry and Maragaret Sedgeman at M J Florists, Causewayhead, Penzance.

PROFESSIONAL florists Mandy Edwards and Jane Harry were once one of the town’s success stories.

The duo set up in business 25 years ago.

Jane has been a florist for 39 years. She trained with her father, Roy Hugo of St Ives, and worked with him for 19 years.

Mandy also trained locally and has worked as a florist for over 27 years.

They became friends over twenty years ago and decided to open their own business with the aim of giving the personal touch to their customers.

M & J Florists was first opened at the top of Causewayhead, Penzance. The shop was small, but had an abundance of fresh cut flowers outside and a wide choice of plants, dried flowers, basketware and floral sundries inside.

Mandy and Jane believed in giving value for money and were only too pleased to suggest the most suitable arrangements and colour schemes for floral displays.

They specialised in bridal flowers - bouquets, posies, corsages and buttonholes -and dried flower arrangements.

Flowers were supplied locally or from Holland and exact colour matches were guaranteed as long as the customer brought along a sample of fabric as a guide.

All dried arrangements were gift wrapped free of charge and made to the customer's requirements.

Flower arrangements for hotels, public houses, churches, receptions and marquees were also being organised. Once a week Mandy and Jane arrange the flowers at the State House Hotel, Land's End. After supplying 400 corsages for a charity function at the hotel they were asked to regularly supply table arrangements and displays for the foyer, and this arrangement lasted many years.

They were members of Flowergram, a new service then for delivering flowers and supply locally, nationally or internationally.
We need some more information on when the florist moved from the top of Causewayhead and a few more details to fill in the blanks if anyone can help
