The man's car hit Blades hairdressers before sliding about 150 yards (135m) down the road, hitting the Westgate Centre and damaging steps outside it.

The car eventually ended up on its side. The middle of the town was closed off after the incident at about 1500 BST on Friday, police said.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene. Road users have been asked to avoid the town centre.

Police closed Westgate Street and Western Road and said it was likely to be shut for several hours.
