These are the memories of Jack Pengelly.
Written in 1988 of his memories of Market Place 1922 through to 1939

RECOLLECTIONS OF PENZANCEMARKET PLACE
30 Pengelly General Grocer with large country delivery round. This was rebuilt and became a part of Timothy Whites
Then there was an opening to the rear of two shops.
31 Maddens Ironmonger, later altered and became True Form Shoe Shop. When True Form first opened a pair of shoes could be bought for fewer than five shillings (now 25d.).
32 West End Drapery Stores, had a large staff and opened later on Thursday’s and Saturday’s, almost until 10p.m.
33 Mitchell’s Outfitters and Hatters. Since changed many times.
34&35 Simpson Bros: Ladies and Gents Outfitters.
36 Market with large iron gates that lead into Bread Street. Meat carcasses could be seen hanging up when passing. This was later altered rebuilt and became extra part of Simpsons and passage Into Bread Street. Opposite Simpsons in Market Place on Thursdays and Saturdays was where a Fruit stall Carts stood, one owned by miss James and the other by the Maddern family.
Lloyds Bank stood opposite Simpsons also had Stores and Market Place level, with Jackson’s Antique's underneath.
37 Polglase Drapers and ladies Wear.
38 Opie the Chemist (one of many shops in the town).
39 Rodda Pork Butcher (owner of much property in the town).
40 Preston Photographer altered and became Dry Cleaners.
42 Badcock & Williams, general grocer also wines and spirits and off license.
